Paint Ontario - Opening NIght

The crowd was buzzing at the 2016 Paint Ontario opening night. It's located at the Lambton Heritage Museum in Grand Bend. Saturday, March 12th was the first day the show was open to the public. It runs until April 3rd. There are several hundred paintings to view from artists from all over Ontario and some out of province as well. The artwork is realism, with the general theme being nature. There is a great range of subjects from floral to landscapes to wildlife. It is a juried show and the quality of the work is always quite good with some really exceptional pieces being displayed. Techniques range from watercolour, to oil, to pastel. If you enjoy great artwork, take a relaxing drive up to Grand Bend and view some truly exciting paintings

Thursday 3 March 2016

I just heard that my paintings have made the cut into the juried Paint Ontario 2016 Art Show. The Lambton Heritage Museum, Grand Bend Ontario, March 12 - April 3rd.

Monday 21 September 2015

Happy to have my work be part of the juried exhibition at St. Thomas- Elgin Public Art Centre. The opening reception was this past Saturday. It was an incredibly rainy day. I dashed across the street and into the gallery. Right at the entrance they had hung my painting "Natural Selection". I couldn't have asked for a more prominent position.

My work is representational and in a open juried fine art show. I knew that the other entries could be quite wide ranging in their subject and technique. I was delighted to see other quality realism works on display. I hadn't been back in this gallery for decades and they have turned into a very modern gallery. They did a great job of mounting this show.

A cousin of mine, Clark McDougall has his work as part of the gallery's permanent collection. Nice to share the gallery space with Clark's work.

Nice to know that my work is out there on display. I'm well into another large painting which I have to return to and start pulling it all together. The show runs from now until October 24th at the St. Thomas Public Art Centre.

My painting made cut in St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre show

"In View of the Artist" is a juried exhibition at the St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre from September 19th until October 24th, 2015.

My entry titled "Natural Selection" is a 36" x 48" oil painting on panel. What follows is my explanation of this painting.

Elucidation:

In my view and through my eyes, I see the wonder of the natural world.
Here I’ve gathered objects that interest, inspire, and summon me to my
easel. Onto a large open white panel I’ve set leaves, vibrant, and filled
with sunlight. Venation patterns like lines on a map, reaching out to
the edge of possibilites. Next, I’ve added feathers and flowers which bring
texture and saturated colours. They display delicate patterns and symmetry.
I value and leverage the quality of the morning light. low, long shadows
stretch and reflect transparently. I am challenged to describe the scene
with my brush strokes. We all casually take note of the beauty but don’t
often register its fragility. Here, I’ve represented our planet as floating
bubbles, beautiful, but precarious, refecting the surroundings, as
I reflect on them. This paint tube is filled with new life. A canister of hope,
a vehicle to tranport my imagination. The oil-stained marks I leave relate
to nature, as nature continues to mark my work and oil continues to
stain our planet.

2015 paintings make Paint Ontario cut

My new 2015 paintings have passed the jury for the Paint Ontario show & sale at the Lambton Heritage Museum. The show runs from March 14th to April 5th.

"A Study in Cerulean" is a quartet vignette in field sketch style. Iridescent colouring and a watchful eye make these Grackles a striking subject.

"Gone to Seed" depicts the classic 1940s GMC pickup truck that survived just beyond the wall of a raging barn fire.

"Ever Moored" presents the warmth of a polished deck on a vintage Chris Craft runabout, held fast against a churning river current.

It is a worthwhile show to attend. The art gallery in the museum is a wonderful venue set in the trees just opposite the entrance to the Pinery Provincial Park. Now that Spring is in the air it makes for an enjoyable drive with an interesting reward (meaning the art show) at the end. Hope that you can make it up to take in this year's show.
